Michael Fong, a dedicated bowler from Suva, is working hard to earn his spot on the national team after just three and a half years in the sport. Fong’s impressive journey has transformed him from a novice to a competitive force within his local bowling club. With the Commonwealth Games approaching later this year, Fong is eager to make his debut on the national stage.

“My ultimate goal has always been to represent Fiji. This year marks three and a half years since I started bowling, and if I perform well and the selectors deem me worthy of the national team, why not?” he expressed enthusiastically. Fong is set to participate in an important competition this weekend, which serves as a lead-up to the national trials the following weekend. He hopes to attract the selectors’ attention with a strong performance.

“I’m ready to put my hand up. I understand the significance of this weekend and the upcoming trials to showcase my abilities,” he remarked. “Given the opportunity, I would be honoured to wear the Fiji jumper and represent the country in international bowls.”

In addition to his bowling aspirations, Fong has a notable background in sports administration. He has served as the former treasurer of the Fiji Table Tennis Association and co-founded the Suva Table Tennis Association. His extensive involvement includes acting as the national coach, manager, and selector for the Tongan national table tennis team.

Although Fong hails from Labasa and has a history as a soccer player, he now focuses on making his mark in lawn bowls. At over 50 years old, he remains optimistic about his athletic ambitions. “Age is not a factor in bowling. Anyone can bowl, whether you’re a teenager, a young adult, or retired. I’ve only been playing for three and a half years,” he stated confidently.

Fong aims to excel in the singles discipline and believes under the coaching of former national representative Semesa Naiseruvati, he may see his long-desired national debut by 2026. Fong’s determination and passion for the sport exemplify a hopeful narrative for aspiring athletes, regardless of age, striving to achieve their dreams.
