The tourism industry continues to play a crucial role in the Fijian economy, significantly impacting GDP growth and job creation, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad. He made these remarks during the inauguration of the first phase of the $75 million Hilton Garden Inn Hotel construction project in Suva.
Prasad emphasized that although efforts are being made to diversify the economy, tourism remains an essential component and will continue to be in the future. He noted that the Hilton Garden Inn’s addition to Fiji’s hospitality sector will bolster the country’s tourism infrastructure.
In his speech, Prasad expressed gratitude to the Carpenters Group and its long-standing presence in Fiji, highlighting their commitment to the country over the past 156 years, which demonstrates their vision and determination to undertake such projects and replicate them in the future.
Investment Fiji CEO Kamal Chetty remarked that the new hotel would help alleviate the accommodation shortfall in Suva. He highlighted that the opening marks a significant step towards addressing the demand for hotel rooms, catering to business travelers and enhancing the city’s overall accommodation options. Chetty also noted that the project’s progress reflects growing confidence in the economy, as it has been in development for some time.
