All social welfare recipients and government pensioners in Fiji will see a 5% increase in their monthly allowances, as announced by Finance Minister Biman Prasad during his Budget address. This increase adds to the previously implemented 15% rise in allowances from the last budget, providing critical support to Fiji’s most vulnerable populations.

“The government remains committed to protecting citizens from the rising costs of living,” Mr. Prasad asserted, emphasizing the importance of this financial relief for workers, consumers, and beneficiaries alike. The budget allocates a total of $220 million for social welfare programs, reflecting an increase of $10 million from the prior year.

This new allowance adjustment is part of a broader cost-of-living package that exceeds $800 million. The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection will oversee the implementation, benefiting from a funding increase to $207.9 million, as compared to $199.5 million last year.

Similar articles from recent weeks highlight the government’s focus on enhancing social support systems amidst ongoing economic challenges. The Minister has been actively engaging with the public to address their concerns regarding welfare and social assistance, with positive developments expected in the upcoming budgets.

These measures not only aim to alleviate immediate financial pressures for Fijians but also signify the government’s proactive approach to ensuring stability and improved living conditions for those most in need. As the country faces continuing economic challenges, these enhancements in welfare assistance represent a hopeful vision for a more inclusive and resilient society.
