The Fijian Government is taking significant steps to enhance safety on the popular Martintar strip in Nadi following an alarming incident involving three crew members from Virgin Airways. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, announced that the situation will be addressed with urgency in a Cabinet meeting to discuss potential security improvements.

Gavoka reassured the public about the Government’s commitment to transparency in managing the situation, stressing that this occurrence is an isolated event and does not represent Fiji’s overall safety. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the nation’s strong reputation in tourism, with Tourism Fiji actively communicating with key international markets to keep them informed.

Most of the crew members involved have already returned home with their families, while the others left soon after. Gavoka acknowledged that incidents can occur anywhere, underscoring the necessity for both residents and tourists to exercise caution, particularly in nightlife areas.

Despite this incident, he reaffirmed Fiji’s standing as a safe travel destination, a key factor in the thriving tourism sector, which is on the verge of welcoming a million visitors. Gavoka noted that demand remains high, especially from regions like Dallas, where flight capacities are nearly full.

Reflecting on the familiarity that airline crews develop with frequent destinations, he remarked that such experiences contribute to a strong community bond, making it regrettable that this incident coincided with New Year celebrations. He reiterated the commitment to ensuring a safe experience for both visitors and residents alike.

This situation serves as a reminder that while isolated incidents do occur, the overarching dedication of the Fijian Government to security and safety is designed to sustain the country’s positive image as a prime tourist destination. The proactive approach taken by the authorities is a hopeful sign for both residents and tourists, reinforcing that together, they can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience in beautiful Fiji.
