In response to an alarming traffic accident in Vitogo, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are intensifying their efforts to promote road safety. Following a collision yesterday between a bus and a twin cab utility vehicle, which resulted in 18 individuals being hospitalized, authorities are deploying additional traffic patrols and checkpoints in high-risk areas and accident-prone intersections.

Public Works, Meteorological Services, and Transport Minister Filipe Tuisawau expressed his condolences to the injured and their families. He emphasized the urgent necessity for increased vigilance and strict adherence to road safety regulations by all motorists and pedestrians.

The LTA, in collaboration with the Fiji Police and Municipal Council enforcement officers, has implemented a National Joint Operations Order. This initiative aims to improve road safety, reduce fatalities, and ensure compliance with road rules as the festive season approaches. The operation will run from November 1 to January 31, coinciding with a period of increased traffic due to holiday gatherings and celebrations.

While road fatalities currently stand at 51, this marks a significant decline from the 71 reported during the same period last year, suggesting that ongoing efforts are making a positive impact on road safety.

Overall, these measures represent a proactive response to enhance safety on Fiji’s roads, especially as the community prepares for the busy festive season. Continued dedication to road safety can lead to even better outcomes, fostering a culture of responsible road use among all citizens.
