The Maritime Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is stepping up its surveillance and inspections at major ports and jetties during the festive season. This initiative will be carried out in partnership with other organizations to enforce compliance with crucial safety regulations for vessel operators.

Key safety measures include ensuring that boat captains are certified, vessels are properly maintained, and passenger numbers do not exceed safety limits. Joweli Cawaki, the CEO of MSAF, emphasized the authority’s commitment to maintaining safety in Fiji’s maritime environment, especially during this busy and potentially hazardous time of year.

“We are dedicated to ensuring that everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season. Through enhanced monitoring and collaboration with our partners, we aim to create a secure environment on the waters,” Commander Cawaki stated.

The MSAF urges boat operators, passengers, and the general public to prioritize safety and comply with maritime regulations when planning trips to outer islands. Given the overlap of the festive and cyclone seasons, Commander Cawaki noted the necessity for heightened vigilance to ensure safe and responsible travel on Fiji’s waterways.

“Fijians should exercise extra caution during this time. Although we hope for pleasant weather, it’s critical to plan maritime travel with safety at the forefront,” he said. Travelers should always check weather forecasts and be prepared to adjust plans if conditions become unfavorable.

As the holidays approach, with Christmas and New Year’s celebrations on the horizon, MSAF highlights the importance of thorough trip planning. Passengers and operators need to be ready for any unexpected weather changes and take every precaution to ensure safety.

The MSAF plays a pivotal role in maritime safety, but public involvement is equally essential. Individuals are encouraged to report any observations or concerns regarding ship safety to help uphold a secure maritime environment.

“While we all look forward to a joyful holiday season, it’s crucial to remain vigilant and responsible in our maritime activities. The safety of our families and communities relies on collective efforts,” concluded Commander Cawaki.

This proactive approach by MSAF signifies a strong commitment to public safety, fostering a sense of community responsibility that can lead to a more enjoyable festive season for everyone involved.

Overall, the emphasis on vigilance and collaboration is a promising step towards ensuring safer travels for all during this celebratory time.
