Officers from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services (FRCS) and various border agencies recently received state-of-the-art drug detection technology to enhance their capabilities in identifying illicit substances at Fiji’s borders. This new equipment, including First Defenders and TruNarc devices, was generously provided through a collaborative effort between the Japanese government and the United Nations Development Programme.

This advanced technology will facilitate real-time scanning and testing of narcotics and hazardous materials, allowing border officials to swiftly assess the categorization of drugs without enduring long delays for laboratory results. The immediate evaluation capabilities represent a significant advancement in Fiji’s border security efforts.

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, emphasized Japan’s commitment to supporting Fiji in this crucial area, stating the importance of enhancing maritime security alongside drug detection. He highlighted that Fiji’s extensive maritime zones necessitate robust measures against potential narcotics trafficking.

Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, referenced a recent international drug bust in Spain where packages had Fiji as their origin, reinforcing the urgency of improved border control. He urged those considering trafficking drugs into Fiji to reconsider, as the new detection tools will enhance the authorities’ ability to intercept illicit activities.

This development marks a significant step towards strengthening Fiji’s preventive measures against drug smuggling, showcasing an ongoing dedication to maintaining public safety and upholding the integrity of the nation’s borders.

As Fiji continues to bolster its defenses against drug trafficking, the collaboration with the Japanese government is a hopeful sign of international partnership in combatting crime and protecting communities. The proactive approach taken by local authorities is commendable and reinforces the message that Fiji is vigilant in safeguarding its borders against the threats posed by illegal narcotics.
