Officers from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services (FRCS) along with various border agencies have received state-of-the-art drug detection technology to enhance their capabilities in identifying drugs at Fiji’s borders. This new equipment, known as First Defenders and TruNarc, was generously provided by the Japanese government in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

The introduction of this high-tech equipment will enable border officials to scan and test narcotics, hazardous chemicals, and other substances on-site in real time. This advancement means that authorities, including the FRCS and police, can now categorize substances instantly, eliminating the prolonged waiting periods for lab results that typically take days or even weeks.

Japanese Ambassador to Fiji, Rokuichiro Michii, emphasized Japan’s commitment to supporting Fiji in strengthening its border security efforts. He stressed the importance of enhancing surveillance capabilities, particularly given Fiji’s extensive maritime zones and related security concerns.

Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, referenced a recent international drug seizure in Spain that had ties to Fiji, with packages labeled accordingly. He asserted that the authorities are actively working to send a clear message to those contemplating drug trafficking into Fiji: “Do not bring drugs to Fiji because we will catch you. This new technology significantly boosts our detection abilities.”

This initiative marks a proactive step towards reinforcing Fiji’s borders against drug trafficking, ultimately contributing to the safety and security of the nation. The partnership with international entities such as Japan and the UNDP highlights the collaborative effort in combating this global issue, ensuring that Fiji remains vigilant against illicit activities.

By equipping local authorities with advanced tools, there is hope for a future where drug-related crimes can be significantly reduced, fostering a safer environment for all Fiji citizens.
