Reigning champions Fiji Blue are set to return to the 2026 McDonald’s Coral Coast Fiji 7s, aiming for an extraordinary third consecutive title at this prestigious sevens tournament. The team has established itself as a dominant force over the last two editions, captivating audiences with their signature blend of discipline, precision, and the vibrant Fijian flair that has become synonymous with their gameplay.
Under the tutelage of Fiji 7s head coach Osea Kolinisau, who has previously led Fiji to Olympic glory as a player, the defending champions are entering the January showdown as strong favorites but with a significant target on their backs. The 2026 men’s division marks a record expansion, featuring 24 teams, making it the most competitive in the tournament’s history. This new format includes 14 international teams, offering a mix of national sevens programs and elite invitational squads eager to challenge Fiji’s best.
Tournament Founding Chairman Jay Whyte emphasized that Fiji Blue’s participation elevates the entire competitive field. He remarked, “Fiji Blue are the benchmark. Having Osea, our 2024 tournament ambassador and the national head coach, lead his side in pursuit of a three-peat lifts the entire tournament. With the incredible depth of local and international teams, they’ll need to be at their absolute best to defend their title. It’s going to be world-class.”
Kolinisau acknowledged the pressure that comes with being the reigning champions but expressed enthusiasm. “We know the target is on our backs, but that’s what makes this tournament special. With so many strong teams coming in from overseas, the level will be very high. The boys are motivated, focused, and ready to represent Fiji with pride as we chase the three-peat,” he stated.
The expanded tournament field also highlights the growing global reputation of the Coral Coast 7s. Whyte noted, “Twenty-four teams, fourteen from overseas, and FJ$50k on the line speaks volumes about the international appeal of this tournament. Teams want to be here, and fans can expect the best sevens action anywhere in the world.”
With the countdown to January 2026 underway, rugby fans can anticipate three days filled with exhilarating matches, intense rivalries, and distinctive Fijian entertainment as Fiji Blue looks to defend its title and create a lasting legacy in Coral Coast 7s history. The tournament is set to take place from January 15 to 17 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.
