Beyond the headline

The race for the knockout rounds tightened at the Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens on Friday as the women’s competition moved into its elimination phase in the tournament’s landmark 50th edition. A string of quarter-final encounters produced a mixture of commanding victories and narrow escapes, setting up a highly competitive push toward the semifinals.

Sinukakala Amazons delivered one of the tournament’s most convincing performances, overpowering Loloma Heights 33-5 to book their place in the next round. Police Blues produced a similarly dominant display, overwhelming Flametree Coloisuva 35-5, while Lilian Amazons ran in five tries to rout Tagimocia 29-0, through a disciplined, high-tempo display that left their opponents scoreless.

The defending champions, Freshet Navy, survived and progressed with a 24-5 victory over Marist Women, underlining their intent to retain the title in this golden anniversary staging. That result will be watched closely as the competition tightens; Freshet Navy’s experience in knockout rugby marked them among the teams to beat as the field narrows.

Not all games were one-sided. Seahawks edged USA Dartmouth in a tight contest, prevailing 12-10 in a match decided in the closing minutes. Ezers Women also scraped through when they denied Striders Women 15-12 in another closely fought affair — results that highlight how marginal differences are separating contenders at this stage.

These outcomes leave the women’s draw punctuated by both established powers and teams in form after the pool stages. The mixture of blowouts and tight finishes suggests the semifinal line-up will feature a balance of firepower and grit, with match-ups to be settled as organisers complete the official draw for the next phase.

This year’s Marist Sevens marks a half-century of the tournament, a milestone that has attracted strong local interest and added significance to every elimination match. With the quarter-final clashes concluded, teams and supporters now turn expectation toward the next rounds where a place in the final — and the honour of being crowned champions of the 50th Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens — hangs in the balance.
