Teams wishing to participate in the upcoming Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s are reminded that registration is on a strict first-come, first-served basis. Games coordinator Vika Vataniyaragi stated that early payment is essential to secure a spot, as several divisions are already facing a surge in interest.
In the men’s division, only 32 spots are available, yet 40 teams have already registered, meaning it will be the earliest payers that will secure their positions. Similarly, the women’s division is capped at eight teams, with ten already having booked their places. The U21 division also faces high demand, with 28 teams expressing interest while only 24 can be accepted.
Vataniyaragi expressed optimism for favorable weather and a competitive atmosphere during the tournament, saying, “We have faith that it will be beautiful weather next weekend. We are anticipating tough competition from teams, and it will be a good rugby weekend.”
The primary objective of the Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s is to raise funds for two significant projects in the Nawadamu community: the construction of a gym and a community hall. The gym, open to clubs associated with the Macuata Rugby Union, aims to benefit grassroots players as they prepare for the Macuata team. Additionally, the community hall is planned to serve an essential function during natural disasters.
These two projects have an estimated budget of approximately $300,000, with the tournament playing a critical role in achieving this target. The Fiji Bitter Labasa 7s is scheduled to take place from January 8-10 at Subrail Park, promising a weekend of thrilling rugby and community spirit. The event not only highlights local talent but also underlines the importance of sports in fostering community development and resilience.
