Hundreds gathered at the FMF Gymnasium in Suva to pay tribute to Ubayd Haider, Fiji’s renowned super feather-weight and light-weight boxing champion, who passed away after a brief illness. The emotional farewell attracted prominent individuals, including Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru, Deputy Speaker of Parliament Lenora Qereqeretabua, and key figures from the boxing community, along with friends and family.
Haider, previously known as Nathan Singh, had been hospitalized for over two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit at Lautoka Aspen Hospital before his death late Sunday night. His passing followed a challenging fight against Runqi Zhou on October 26, where he collapsed on his way to the changing room after suffering a technical knockout (TKO).
In a heartfelt tribute, Mohammed Shameem, director of South Pacific Boxing Promotions, remembered Haider for his kindness, strength, and significant contributions to boxing in Fiji. He emphasized that while the community mourns Haider’s loss, they also aim to honor his legacy by embodying the lessons he imparted.
Haider’s brother, Sebastian Singh, expressed gratitude for the support their family received during Haider’s illness. He revealed that despite being unwell leading up to the fight, Haider remained determined and fought valiantly until the ninth round. Sebastian reflected on the admiration and love his brother garnered worldwide, encouraging their parents to take pride in raising such a courageous son.
Condolences poured in from various figures, including former sporting icon Sonny Bill Williams and veteran trainer John Ramos, who underscored the profound impact of Haider’s passing on the boxing community. Minister Saukuru assured the Singh family that an investigation would be conducted to uncover the circumstances surrounding Haider’s last fight.
Ubayd Haider was laid to rest at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and dedication that continues to inspire many in the boxing world.
