The Mata ni Tikina Tavua, Ratu Ovini Bokini, has emphasized the urgent need to revitalize traditional coastal monitoring systems in light of a recent significant drug seizure in Vatia waters. During his address regarding coastal security, Ratu Ovini underscored the importance of the iTaukei traditional structure, which encompasses sea wardens and qoliqoli committees established at the tikina (district) level.

He pointed out that these groups hold a crucial responsibility for policing their designated fishing grounds, known as qoliqoli areas, and for monitoring any irregular activities. However, many of these committees have been inactive for an extended period. Ratu Ovini stressed the necessity for a concerted effort at both village and tikina levels to enhance their operational capabilities.

“The revitalization efforts should empower these committees to identify and report suspicious drug-related activities,” he stated. He further emphasized the critical role of local knowledge in securing national borders, especially given the scale of the recent drug bust.

This incident, which involved the early-morning raid that led to the seizure of over 100 sacks of suspected cocaine and the arrest of six individuals—including four foreign nationals from Ecuador and two locals—highlights the challenges faced in coastal security. Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that the operation was conducted by various specialized units, including the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and the Serious Organised Crime and Intelligence Department (SOCID), in collaboration with both local and international law enforcement agencies.

The ongoing investigations into the shipment and the apprehended suspects reflect a commitment to tackling drug trafficking in the region. The collaborative model proposed by Ratu Ovini, where traditional guardians work alongside the Fiji Police Force and local communities, offers a hopeful pathway towards enhancing security and protecting local populations from illegal activities.
