Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, has stated that Fiji’s resilience heavily relies on strong partnerships aimed at reducing disaster risks and saving lives. During his address at the National Disaster Risk Management Act Awareness Workshop in Suva, he highlighted the importance of collaboration among those on the frontlines of disaster response and recovery.
Ditoka noted that the workshop is part of National Disaster Awareness Week 2025, and serves as an invaluable opportunity for open discussions, communal learning, and a renewed commitment to fostering a stronger and more resilient Fiji. The global theme, “Fund Resilience, Not Disasters,” resonates strongly in the context of Fiji and the broader region. He emphasized that investment in preparedness is critical, as every dollar spent saves lives and curbs greater losses in the future.
The recent National Disaster Risk Management Act 2024, according to Ditoka, marks a significant advancement, establishing a modern and inclusive framework for disaster management in Fiji. He stressed that the Act promotes the active involvement of women, youth, and individuals with disabilities, ensuring they are integral players in disaster management rather than merely passive beneficiaries.
Gabrielle Emery, UNDRR Pacific Sub-Regional Head, praised the new Act as a commendable and consultative piece of legislation, aligning with international best practices and reflecting Fiji’s leadership in establishing effective governance for disaster risk management. Southeast Asia Disaster Law Adviser Padmini Nayagam also lauded Fiji’s initiative, adding that the new legislation enhances coordination among stakeholders, clearly delineates responsibilities, and fosters accountability throughout the national system.
The two-day workshop also includes a tabletop tsunami response exercise to assess Fiji’s preparedness and inter-agency coordination. This practical component underscores the commitment to continually improve disaster readiness.
Fiji’s proactive approach, highlighted by the Minister and workshop participants, demonstrates an overarching understanding of the critical necessity for community engagement and collective responsibility in addressing disaster resilience amidst ongoing challenges. By fostering a culture of cooperation and shared responsibility, Fiji is poised not only to endure hardships but to thrive, setting an inspiring example for other vulnerable nations facing similar challenges.
