Fiji bets on nature-based resilience with $27M CIF funding

The Fijian government has successfully secured $27 million from the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) to support its ambitious Nature, People, and Climate (NPC) investment plan. This initiative focuses on a comprehensive mountain-to-ocean approach, aimed at enhancing climate resilience and restoring ecosystems across critical areas such as watersheds, coastal zones, and marine environments. With more than 80,000 Fijians expected to benefit, this funding represents a significant step towards environmental sustainability and economic stability.

Tariye Gbadegesin, the CEO of CIF, emphasized the vital link between investing in nature and ensuring a prosperous future for Fiji. He noted that the country’s natural environment is fundamental to its economy and communities, which rely heavily on tourism, agriculture, fisheries, and forestry. Overall, these sectors account for a considerable portion of Fiji’s GDP and employment, making the NPC plan essential for safeguarding economic interests.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, reaffirmed the government’s vision of achieving high-income status by 2050 while eradicating poverty, underscoring that climate resilience will be crucial in reaching these milestones. The partnership with CIF is expected to mitigate climate-related risks by protecting assets and supporting sustainable growth.

Furthermore, Dr. Sivendra Michael, Permanent Secretary for Environment and Climate Change, highlighted that this funding would bolster existing policies and plans to protect livelihoods, the economy, and Fiji’s rich natural and cultural heritage. He also encouraged other donors to join this crucial initiative, which acknowledges the escalating climate threats that Fiji faces, including rising sea levels and extreme weather events.

In addition to the $27 million commitment, the NPC plan includes $4 million in grants specifically allocated for Indigenous Peoples and local communities. This funding will enable them to implement climate solutions that leverage traditional knowledge, thus fostering local engagement and innovation in tackling climate issues.

The CIF’s investment is part of a broader $400 million global NPC program designed to aid low- and middle-income countries in scaling nature-based solutions for enhancing climate resilience, promoting biodiversity, and supporting sustainable livelihoods. By prioritizing environmental and community-centered strategies, Fiji demonstrates its leadership in the global fight against climate change, inspiring hope for a sustainable future not only for its citizens but also for other nations facing similar challenges.
