World Town Planning Day and World Cities Day were recently commemorated in Suva, where Fiji’s Housing and Local Government Minister, Maciu Nalumisa, underscored the nation’s urgent need for qualified town planners. Speaking at Ratu Sukuna Park, Minister Nalumisa highlighted that Fiji currently has fewer than ten planners serving the national system, placing a significant strain on this small group of professionals and underlining the importance of inclusivity in the planning process.
“Planning must be everyone’s business, from Government to local councils and from developers to communities,” emphasized Nalumisa, stressing the need for broader participation in urban planning to address the challenges Fijians currently face in their living environments.
In an effort toward modernization and efficiency in planning processes, Nalumisa announced that the Building Permit Online System is nearing implementation and will first be introduced to five municipal councils. This digital platform aims to expedite application processes, allowing planners to concentrate on long-term developmental strategies rather than day-to-day applications.
Furthermore, he confirmed that assessments of the Navua and Nadi Town Planning Schemes are ongoing, which are critical to accommodating future growth in these regions. This also reflects a commitment to addressing urbanization challenges and the strategic need for sustainable development, particularly in light of ongoing housing shortages throughout Fiji.
