Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka affirmed the Fijian Government’s commitment to combating worker exploitation, discrimination, and unfair treatment during his address at the International Trade Union Confederation Asia Pacific Regional Council meeting held in Nadi. He emphasized that the government is taking significant steps to review and bolster the nation’s labor laws and enforcement mechanisms to ensure fair treatment for all workers, regardless of their background.
Mr. Rabuka highlighted ongoing collaborations with Australia and New Zealand to promote safe, equitable working conditions, adequate housing, and robust monitoring of ethical recruitment practices. This initiative underscores the government’s aim to create a working environment that reflects justice and decency at all levels.
He announced plans to align the Employment Relations Act with International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions to enhance workers’ rights, including restoring the right to freedom of association and collective bargaining. These reforms will address barriers to union registration and strengthen labor inspection systems to foster fairness and justice throughout the workforce.
The Prime Minister acknowledged that global trends such as automation, artificial intelligence, and climate change are reshaping employment landscapes, presenting both challenges and opportunities for small island nations like Fiji. The government is responding to these dynamics by investing in skills development and vocational training, particularly targeting youth and women, and promoting initiatives focused on sustainable green and blue economies.
Mr. Rabuka noted the importance of eliminating digital divides through strategies aimed at ensuring all workers, particularly marginalized communities, benefit from technological advancements. Social protection reforms are also being pursued to safeguard against crises, ensuring that no worker is left vulnerable.
These actions reflect not only a responsive governance approach to pressing economic and social issues but also a commitment to fostering a more inclusive future for all Fijians. By enhancing labor practices and championing workers’ rights, the Fijian government is paving the way for a more equitable and humane working environment, promising progress that enhances the welfare of both workers and the broader community.
