The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee is optimistic about the country’s representation at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Kilner expressed confidence in the competitiveness and depth of the national team, which is poised to make a strong showing across multiple sports.
Fiji is focusing on its weightlifting team, which is considered a major strength, alongside the men’s and women’s 3×3 basketball teams that qualified for the Games following impressive performances in Palau. Kilner emphasized the quality of the athletes, stating, “I think we’ve actually got a really, really good team going into Glasgow. We’ve got some really good weightlifters that are targeted for Glasgow. We’ve got a great 3×3 basketball team that have come out of Palau.”
Boxing is another area of potential success, with several local boxers showing noteworthy talent and gaining valuable experience from recent international competitions. Judo is anticipated to be a strong contender as well, with consistent performances from national representatives indicating they are well-prepared for the Games.
Fiji’s influential presence will also be felt in lawn bowls, where athletes have recently performed exceptionally well, including finishing as runners-up in a world championship. Additionally, the swimming squad appears to be on the rise, with promising signs from the current team.
Kilner expressed pride in the overall strength of the Fiji team, anticipating that many athletes will return from Glasgow having achieved personal bests and potentially setting new records. Such expectations foster a sense of hope and excitement, indicating that Fiji’s preparation and talent at the Commonwealth Games could lead to remarkable accomplishments on an international stage.
