Fiji Becomes Tier One Rugby Nation as Home Tests Move to Europe

The excitement at Rugby House is palpable as Fiji prepares for a groundbreaking year in the forthcoming Nations Championship, scheduled to begin next July. This significant step forward marks Fiji’s inclusion as a Tier One nation in the world of rugby, a development that officials say will redefine the country’s rugby landscape. Lailanie Burns, a board member of the Fiji Rugby Union (FRU), emphasized the extensive work being undertaken to ensure the best decisions for both players and the commercial dynamics of the union.

In an interview, Burns noted the partnership with CAA Portas, a prominent global management consultancy, aimed at determining the most effective neutral venues for matches using scientific data. With this exciting opportunity, all of Fiji’s home matches will now take place in Europe, where they will face tough competition from traditional rugby powers such as Wales, Scotland, and England.

Koli Sewabu, the acting chief executive of FRU, highlighted the historic significance of this inclusion, stating, “We’re very excited; it’s a revolutionary time for Fiji Rugby.” This new chapter is not only a milestone for the national team but is expected to have broad benefits across the rugby community in Fiji.

Both Burns and Sewabu acknowledged the proactive efforts the union is making to secure venues in the northern hemisphere ahead of the matches. Their comments came during a screening of the documentary “Breaking Ground,” which showcases the rise of women’s rugby in Fiji, reflecting a growing commitment to developing rugby in various forms within the nation.

With the upcoming Nations Championship, Fiji has the potential to enhance its rugby profile on the global stage, creating opportunities that may positively impact the sport’s future in the country.
