Google is set to establish a new cable landing station at its ICT facility in Natadola, Fiji, which will play a crucial role in enhancing the country’s digital infrastructure. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka announced this development during the groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday. He emphasized that this facility will serve as an important hub for digital connectivity in the Pacific.

The ICT facility will feature state-of-the-art technology, including data transmission servers and power-generating equipment, making it the second cable landing station in Viti Levu. This enhancement is expected to significantly improve Fiji’s internet connectivity and increase its resilience against disruptions. The new infrastructure will support Google’s transnational subsea telecommunication cables, connecting Fiji to key regions including the United States, Australia, Japan, and Chile.

Mr. Rabuka highlighted the facility’s potential to strengthen international data flows, foster innovation, and enable Pacific communities to engage in the global digital economy, ensuring inclusivity in the technological age. He described the project as reflective of the government’s commitment to empowering the people of Fiji and aligning with sustainable growth goals.

Google representatives at the event included Vice President of Global Network Infrastructure Brian Quigley and Submarine Innovation Lead Shirshendu Bhattacharya. Mr. Quigley reaffirmed Google’s dedication to enhancing global connectivity through this initiative, which is part of a broader project aimed at bridging the digital divide in the Pacific.

This collaboration involves key stakeholders such as the Fiji National Provident Fund and Fiji International Telecommunications Ltd (FINTEL), marking a significant step towards improving digital infrastructure in the region.

In summary, this new ICT facility stands to position Fiji as a pivotal node in the global internet landscape, reinforcing the country’s connectivity while fostering economic growth and innovation.

As Fiji embarks on this technological journey, it offers a hopeful future for the nation, promising increased access to international markets and a stronger presence in the global economy.
