In a thrilling encounter, the Manu Samoa faced off against Fiji in a crucial match that would determine their qualification for the Rugby World Cup 2027. A victory for Fiji would secure a spot for Ikale Tahi due to their automatic qualification after reaching the quarter-finals in the 2023 World Cup in France.

Manu Samoa came out strong, exhibiting impressive attacking plays and effectively utilizing their rolling maul from lineouts, a strategy that Fiji found challenging to counter. Captain Michael Alaalatoa’s choice to kick for touch from penalties highlighted Samoa’s confidence in their mauling ability, as they sought out tries against the Fijian defense.

A standout performer for Samoa was Number 8, Iakopo Mapu, who proved to be a force with his solid runs. Despite Fiji’s efforts, particularly from Elia Canakaivata who delivered excellent tackles for the Fijians, the first half ended with Samoa leading 15-12.

Samoa’s fly-half Rodney Iona also showcased his skills, playing an exceptional game with the exception of one over-cooked penalty kick early in the second half. Unfortunately, Samoa faced a setback when Taleni Seu received a yellow card, leaving them to fend off Fiji for 10 minutes.

Fiji capitalized on their opportunities and in the 60th minute, Etonia Waqa’s strategic play on the left wing led to a thrilling try, putting Fiji ahead 19-15. The Fijian side maintained their momentum, with Kalaveti Ravouvou sealing their victory with a try in the 79th minute, ending the game with a score of 29-15 in favor of Fiji.

This win secured Fiji’s place in the Pacific Nations Cup semi-finals, where they are set to face Canada, the runner-up from Pool A. Meanwhile, Japan and Tonga will contest in the second semi-final, continuing the excitement and intense competition of the series.

This match serves as a testament to the competitive spirit and determination of both teams, highlighting the dynamic nature of Pacific rugby as fans eagerly anticipate the upcoming semi-finals.
