The Beach Soccer League kicked off last Saturday at the Fiji Sports Council beach soccer field in Laucala Bay, marking a significant effort to identify and develop top-tier players for regional OFC competitions.
Under the leadership of Jerry Sam, the head coach for Fiji Futsal and Beach Soccer, the league aims to serve as a vital training ground for aspiring athletes looking to achieve international acclaim. The inaugural day featured six thrilling matches, showcasing the competitive spirit inherent in the league.
In a tightly fought contest, Lami narrowly defeated Northland with a score of 4-3, while Navua triumphed over Naitasiri with a commanding 7-3 after arriving late to the match. Rewa and Naitasiri secured wins by default against Suva and Nasinu, respectively.
Sam highlighted the league’s purpose, stating, “Our main goal in running this league is to identify talented players who possess an understanding of the game and strong technical abilities.” He pointed out that beach soccer demands a unique skill set that includes exceptional ball control and precise passing, distinguishing it from futsal.
Currently, the league comprises seven teams from the Southern Division, with many players bringing experience from the national league. Sam also shared news of upcoming expansion plans, as more teams from Labasa and Ba are expected to join in the following year. Ba has already begun preparations for a team, reflecting the growing enthusiasm for beach soccer throughout Fiji.
As the Beach Soccer League advances, Sam is focused on creating a squad of elite players to represent Fiji on the international stage, signaling promise for the future of the sport in the region.
This initiative not only enhances the sporting landscape of Fiji but also provides a platform for youth to showcase their talent and passion for beach soccer, fostering a sense of community and purpose among the players. The development of the league indicates a bright future for not just beach soccer but for Fijian sports as a whole.
