The Beach Soccer League kicked off last Saturday at the Fiji Sports Council beach soccer field in Laucala Bay, marking a significant milestone in the search for top-notch players for the upcoming OFC competitions. Under the leadership of Fiji Futsal and Beach Soccer head coach Jerry Sam, the league aims to scout and develop talent for future international representation.
The inaugural day featured six thrilling matches. Lami triumphed over Northland in a narrow victory, finishing 4-3, while Navua secured a convincing 7-3 win against Naitasiri despite their late arrival. Additionally, Rewa and Naitasiri earned default victories against Suva and Nasinu.
In a recent interview, Coach Sam highlighted the league’s crucial role in identifying skilled players, stating, “Our main goal in running this league is to identify talented players who possess an understanding of the game and strong technical abilities.” He mentioned the distinct technical demands of beach soccer compared to futsal, including high ball control and precise passing.
Currently, the league features seven teams from the Southern Division, many of which have experience in the national league. Coach Sam also revealed that there are plans to expand the league next year, with teams from Labasa and Ba expected to join. Ba has already shown interest in forming its own team, reflecting the increasing popularity of beach soccer in Fiji.
As the league progresses, Sam remains focused on building a squad of elite players capable of making their mark on the international stage. This initiative not only showcases the talent within Fiji but also fosters a vibrant football culture, offering hopeful prospects for the future of beach soccer in the nation.
Overall, the league’s establishment is a positive development for Fiji’s sports scene and underscores the country’s commitment to nurturing and developing athletic talent.
