Spread the love

Heavy rains and flash flooding have significantly impacted Fiji, leading to multiple road closures across the Central, Western, and Northern Divisions. The situation worsened in Nadi town, which became impassable, notably on Christmas Day.

The Fiji Roads Authority has issued a warning for residents and travelers to exercise extreme caution and adhere strictly to all road closures, as hazardous conditions abound. In anticipation of further flooding, police have advised those living in flood-prone regions between Sigatoka and Nausori to seek higher ground for safety.

As per the Fiji Metservice, a heavy rain warning remains effective, particularly for the Northern Division, where persistent heavy rainfall is likely to cause flash flooding in vulnerable low-lying areas. Flash flood warnings have been activated for regions including Dreketilailai, Nayarabale, and Labasa town, as well as parts of the Central Eastern division.

Rainfall measurements on Thursday morning were concerning, with Dreketilailai reporting 57.5mm between 4 AM and 7 AM, while Nayarabale recorded 55mm in that timeframe. Over 24 hours leading up to 3 AM, Nayarabale accumulated a substantial 104mm of rainfall.

The adverse weather conditions, caused by a low-pressure trough, are expected to persist and affect various northern regions of Fiji throughout the day. Residents are advised to stay updated through the Fiji Metservice website for real-time weather information.

While the flooding presents serious challenges, the community’s resilience shines through as locals come together in response. The proactive measures taken by local authorities and the spirit of cooperation among residents offer hope that the community will successfully navigate this crisis and enhance their preparedness for future weather-related events. Building resilience in the face of adversity is a hallmark of the Fijian spirit.

In summary, Fiji is currently experiencing substantial flooding due to heavy rains, prompting numerous road closures. Authorities are taking necessary precautions to ensure safety, and the community’s cooperative efforts provide a glimmer of hope and strength during this trying time.
