Fiji Battles NCD Epidemic: A Call for Health Revolution

Fiji is grappling with a serious health crisis, as non-communicable diseases (NCDs) now comprise 80 percent of all deaths and account for 40 percent of premature deaths in the country, according to Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, Minister for Health and Medical Services.

These concerning figures, largely attributable to lifestyle choices, reflect a global trend. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that NCDs cause 71 percent of worldwide deaths, with low- and middle-income countries like Fiji suffering the most. The United Nations adds that 85 percent of premature NCD fatalities occur in these areas.

In Fiji, circulatory diseases, diabetes, and cancers are the leading causes of death, affecting both genders. The Republic of Fiji Vital Statistics Report from 2016 to 2021 illustrates the severity of the situation, indicating that NCDs are the primary cause of death across all age demographics.

The financial impact on Fiji’s healthcare system is significant, with the costs associated with NCD-related deaths and disabilities estimated at 591 million Fijian dollars in 2019 alone. The primary contributors to this epidemic are well recognized: poor dietary habits, tobacco consumption, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol intake. Dr. Lalabalavu points out that these are risk factors that can be modified.

Other countries have effectively reduced NCDs through strategic measures that Fiji could consider adopting. For example, Finland’s national salt reduction initiative has significantly decreased hypertension rates. Australia has seen a sharp decline in smoking rates due to stringent tobacco control measures, including plain packaging and high taxes. Similarly, Mexico’s sugar tax has led to a 7.6 percent decline in sugary beverage consumption in just two years.

Fiji’s Wellness Division is actively collecting vital data to inform health promotion and prevention strategies. Nonetheless, tackling the NCD crisis will necessitate a united effort, robust policy interventions, and heightened public awareness.

It is imperative to make healthier choices now to foster a healthier future.
