The Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) has confirmed a significant outbreak of the Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) in the Nadi area, specifically first detected on a maize farm in Uciwai on April 23, 2025. This invasive pest poses a serious threat to agriculture, particularly to key crops like maize, rice, and sugarcane, due to its rapid reproduction and destructive feeding habits.

In response to this alarming situation, BAF has mobilized 17 incident management teams across the nation to conduct a delimiting survey. Efforts have included 1,437 site inspections nationwide, resulting in the conclusion that all confirmed infestations are confined to maize plantations at this time. Chief Plant Protection Officer Nitesh Dutt emphasized that rigorous pest control measures have been implemented, with treated fields undergoing insecticide applications of Malathion, Bifenthrin, Spinosad, and Methate on a rotational basis to prevent resistance.

Dr. Shalendra Prasad, Director of Research at the Ministry of Agriculture, has urged farmers, particularly those cultivating maize, to remain vigilant for signs of infestation, noting that early detection is key to mitigating potential damage. The community is encouraged to report any suspected sightings to local authorities.

The presence of Fall Armyworm is not only concerning for Fiji, but it also highlights similar challenges faced by neighboring countries like Australia, New Zealand, and Tonga. However, Fiji possesses a strong agricultural resilience and a history of effective pest management strategies. Previous responses to agricultural threats demonstrate the authority’s proactive stance and commitment to ensuring food security.

Despite the challenges posed by the Fall Armyworm outbreak, the concerted efforts of the authorities and the engagement of local communities reflect a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji’s agriculture. Continued awareness and collaboration among farmers, agricultural stakeholders, and government agencies can help safeguard the country’s food supply and promote resilience in the agricultural sector.
