Fiji is currently grappling with a significant dengue fever outbreak, having reported 2,436 cases from January 1 to February 23, 2025. The Western Division is the hardest hit, with 1,411 confirmed cases leading to an official outbreak declaration on February 3. This surge in dengue cases is largely attributed to heavy rainfall and flooding, especially following Tropical Cyclone Rae, which has created ideal conditions for mosquito breeding.
The Central Division has also reported 559 cases, while the Northern and Eastern Divisions have 419 and 47 cases, respectively. In response to the escalating crisis, the Ministry of Health has launched a comprehensive series of public health interventions aimed primarily at the Western Division, where the outbreak is most acute.
Health officials are conducting house-to-house surveillance, applying larvicides to eliminate mosquito larvae, and spraying to control adult mosquito populations. Additionally, cleanup campaigns are underway to remove potential breeding sites, and environmental health officers are inspecting properties for compliance, with penalties imposed for violations of public health regulations.
The Ministry emphasizes the importance of public education regarding preventive measures against dengue and encourages individuals to eliminate standing water and seek medical attention promptly if symptoms arise.
