Fiji Bati’s World Cup Hopes Hang by a Thread Against Cook Islands

The Vodafone Fiji Bati are set to face the Cook Islands Aitu tonight in a crucial match that could reignite their chances of qualifying for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. A win over the Cook Islands would significantly boost the Bati’s hopes after their previous setback against Papua New Guinea, where they suffered a 22-10 defeat at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva last Saturday.

Head coach Wise Kativerata stressed the importance of the upcoming game, saying it is vital not just for the Bati but for Fijian Rugby League as they prepare for the World Cup. He pointed out that the recent loss was not merely about the score line; the team must focus on improving fundamental aspects of their game.

Kativerata noted that mistakes, like intercepts, were exploited by the Kumuls during their last match, highlighting areas that need attention. Regardless of the outcome in tonight’s game, there remains a pathway for the Bati to qualify if the Cook Islands manage to defeat the Kumuls next month in Port Moresby.

The matchup between the Bati and the Cooks is scheduled for 8:10 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
