Fiji Bati’s Rugby Hopes Dashed as Brothers Sit Out 2024 Championship

Fiji Bati has encountered a major setback for the upcoming 2024 Pacific Championships, as brothers Daniel and Jacob Saifiti have decided to withdraw from the tournament. The duo last played for their national team in 2017, leaving Fijian supporters eager for their return.

In an interview with The Newcastle Herald, the Saifiti brothers confirmed they will not compete for Fiji this year but expressed their intentions to represent their country in the 2026 Rugby League World Cup, scheduled to take place in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

Daniel Saifiti stated, “I definitely will again, that’s for sure.” He indicated that due to personal circumstances, including moving clubs, he felt unable to commit to this year’s tournament.

The Fiji Bati will be adjusting their lineup, with notable players such as Brandon Wakeham, Apisai Koroisau, and Jahream Bula also unavailable. Head coach Wise Kativerata mentioned that discussions with several other players, including Sydney Roosters’ Mark Nawaqanitawase, are ongoing to build a competitive team for the Pacific Bowl, where Fiji will face the Cook Islands and Papua New Guinea. The winning team will progress to the Pacific Championships next year.

A predicted Fiji team for the 2025 Pacific Championships includes: Sunia Turuva, Maika Sivo, Mark Nawaqanitawase, Semi Valemei, Mikaele Ravalawa, Kevin Naiqama, Kurt Donoghoe, Tui Kamikamica, Penioni Tagituimua, King Vuniyayawa, Siua Wong, Viliame Kikau, and Taane Milne. The interchange players are expected to be Kitione Kautoga, Gordon Whippy, Apisalome Saukuru, and Caleb Navale.
