The Vodafone Fiji Bati team has slipped one position in the latest International Rugby League (IRL) world rankings, which were announced yesterday. This change comes as Papua New Guinea ascends from seventh to sixth place, having secured consecutive victories in the Pacific Bowl Championship.
Head coach Waisea Kativerata remarked that while this isn’t the team’s highest ranking, it reflects their dedication and performance during the Pacific Bowl Championship, setting a positive foundation for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.
The Bati currently ranks higher than several nations, including France, Cook Islands, Serbia, Netherlands, and Wales.
On a positive note, the Bulikula women’s team celebrated a significant achievement, moving up ten places to rank 16th. Coach Joe Rabele expressed pride in this advancement, highlighting that the Fijian women now surpass countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, and the Philippines in the rankings. Rabele is hopeful that they can break into the top ten by next year.
Australia continues to dominate both the men’s and women’s rankings following their victories in the Pacific Cup, while England retains the top spot for wheelchair teams.
Other notable movements in the rankings include Fetu Samoa’s impressive rise following their successful campaign in the women’s IRL World Rankings, and Tonga’s return to the top four in the men’s standings. New Zealand also makes its debut in the wheelchair rankings.
Overall, the movements in the rankings reflect the competitive spirit and progress of rugby league teams globally, showcasing the growing prominence and talent in the sport, particularly from the Pacific nations.
This article emphasizes the resilience and potential of Fijian rugby league teams, suggesting a bright future and the possibility of climbing even higher in international standings.
