Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua, known as Joe Lovodua, is optimistic that the Vodafone Fiji Bati players will serve as excellent role models for the youth in Fiji, especially amid rising drug abuse issues. The 26-year-old is making a comeback to the team after missing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to an injury.
Hailing from Vabea, Ono, Kadavu, Lovodua also has maternal ties to Naivucini in Naitasiri. He expressed that the highlight of returning to Fiji after over six years is the chance to reconnect with his family. He praised the team’s community initiatives, particularly the visits that allow them to meet their families face-to-face.
“The best part is seeing all the people and bringing smiles to their faces,” Lovodua said. “We recognize that Fiji is facing tough times with drug-related issues, but we want to be positive role models for the children looking up to us.”
Lovodua expressed excitement about being back in the Fiji Bati camp after such a long absence. He noted the presence of many young players in the squad and feels optimistic about the team’s future. He aspires to be selected for the next World Cup.
“Being chosen for the World Cup team is always an ambition of mine,” Lovodua commented. “We have traditionally performed well in the World Cup despite being underestimated by other countries. The team and board aim to push for higher goals and not merely participate. We strive to improve continually.”
When discussing the upcoming match against the Cook Islands Aitu, Lovodua acknowledged their strength. “They are a tough team and carry great pride and passion in the game. Both sides want to deliver their best for their nation, and we are all proud of our roots.”
Lovodua believes the team has learned valuable lessons from their previous match against PNG. “With another solid training session, we aim to correct the mistakes we made last weekend.” Lovodua currently plays for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
