Fiji Bati Turn to Youth for Pacific Bowl Opener Against Cook Islands

Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata is preparing to give young players the opportunity to shine in their opening match against the Cook Islands this Saturday, October 18. Emphasizing a “next man up” mentality within the team, Kativerata is set to incorporate fresh faces into the lineup as he looks to assess new combinations in the lead-up to the Pacific Bowl Championship.

Kativerata expressed excitement about mentoring younger athletes who have been training with the Bati for the past two years, some even bringing senior NRL experience to the squad. He stated, “I’m looking to groom a few of the young boys coming in. I want to see how they handle Cook Islands leading towards the game against PNG.”

Captain Tui Kamikamica echoed the coach’s sentiments, highlighting the critical chance for these emerging talents to prove themselves in the absence of seasoned players like Api Koroisau and Viliame Kikau. “It’s a big challenge for the boys but I’m pretty excited for them,” Kamikamica noted, underlining the team’s brotherhood and cohesive spirit as they adapt to the current circumstances.

The Fiji Bati squad, which is blending local talents with those playing overseas, will face the Cook Islands at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, kickstarting their campaign with strong ambitions. Kativerata’s philosophy extends beyond immediate results; he aims to fortify the foundation of Fijian rugby league for the future, ensuring that the development of young players remains a core focus.

Despite the disappointment of missing key players due to injuries and suspensions, Kativerata remains optimistic about the capabilities of his current squad. He reflected on the importance of strong character and discipline within the team, believing these qualities will foster both athletic and personal growth among the players.

The upcoming clash against the Cook Islands not only serves as a crucial match in the tournament but also as a platform for emerging stars to elevate their profiles in international rugby league. With a commitment to nurturing talent and a vibrant team spirit, Fiji Bati is poised to make a significant impact as they aim for success in the Pacific Bowl Championship.
