Fiji Bati Star Eyes Role Model Status Amid Rising Drug Concerns

Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua, commonly known as Joe Lovodua, aims for the Vodafone Fiji Bati representatives to serve as positive role models for children in Fiji, particularly amid rising drug use issues in the country. The 26-year-old is making his comeback to the team after being sidelined during the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to injury.

Lovodua originates from Vabea, Ono, Kadavu, with maternal ties to Naivucini in Naitasiri. He expressed that the highlight of returning to Fiji after over six years is the opportunity to reconnect with family and appreciated the team’s community outreach programs, which allow them to meet their relatives in person.

“The best thing is just seeing all the people and putting a smile on everyone’s face,” he stated. “We understand that it’s a hard time going on in Fiji right now, relating with drugs and all that, but we just want to be a positive role model in the public to the kids looking up to us. It’s good to be back in the Fiji Bati camp after such a long time.”

With many younger players on the team, Lovodua believes that the future of the Fiji Bati is bright, and he is thankful to be among them. He has set his sights on securing a spot in the squad for the next World Cup, stating, “It’s always an ambition and goal of mine to be available to be selected in the World Cup team. We always perform well in the tournament, often being underestimated by other nations. The board and the team aim to reach higher goals, aspiring to make the finals rather than merely participating.”

When asked about the upcoming match against the Cook Islands, Lovodua acknowledged their strength, saying, “There’s a lot of pride and passion in the game, and each side aims to deliver their best for their nation. We are all proud of our heritage and where our families come from.”

He noted the lessons learned from a prior match against Papua New Guinea and expressed confidence in training, saying, “I think we’re trying to correct some mistakes for the weekend ahead.” Lovodua currently plays for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
