Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua is eager for the Vodafone Fiji Bati representatives to serve as positive role models for children in Fiji, especially in light of the increasing drug-related issues in the country. Known as Joe Lovodua, the 26-year-old is set to return to the national team after missing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to an injury.

Lovodua, who hails from Vabea, Ono, Kadavu, and has maternal ties to Naivucini in Naitasiri, expressed that the highlight of being back in Fiji after over six years is reuniting with family. He commended the team’s community engagement initiatives and the opportunity to connect with relatives in person.

“The best part is seeing everyone and bringing smiles to their faces,” Lovodua stated. “We recognize that Fiji is facing difficult challenges, particularly regarding drugs, and we aim to be positive influences for the youth who look up to us.”

With the integration of younger players into the squad, Lovodua is optimistic about the future of the Fiji Bati team and feels honored to be selected alongside them. He aspires to be part of the next World Cup team.

“It has always been my ambition to be available for selection in the World Cup,” he noted. “Historically, we have performed well in the World Cup and often go underestimated by other nations. The board and the team are aiming higher, striving not just to participate but to reach the finals and continue improving.”

Regarding their upcoming match against the Cook Islands Aitu, Lovodua acknowledged the challenges posed by the opposing team. “There is a great deal of pride and passion at stake, and both teams want to deliver their best performance for their nation. We take pride in our heritage and where our families come from.”

He added that the team has learned valuable lessons from their previous match against PNG, and with another solid training session, they are determined to rectify past mistakes this weekend. Lovodua currently plays for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
