Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua is optimistic that the Vodafone Fiji Bati representatives will serve as positive role models for the youth in Fiji, especially as drug use cases increase. Lovodua, who is also known as Joe, is returning to the team after missing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to an injury.
At 26 years old, Lovodua hails from Vabea in Ono, Kadavu, and has maternal ties to Naivucini in Naitasiri. He expressed that the highlight of returning to Fiji after over six years is reconnecting with family. He also praised the team’s community outreach programs, which allow players to meet their families in person.
“The best part is seeing all the people and bringing smiles to their faces,” he stated. Lovodua acknowledged the difficult circumstances currently facing Fiji due to drug issues and emphasized the team’s desire to be positive role models for children.
“It’s great to be back in the Fiji Bati camp after such a long time,” he added. Lovodua remarked on the promising future of the Bati, noting the presence of younger players and his gratitude for being selected among them. He aspires to be chosen for the next World Cup.
“It’s always been my ambition and goal to make the World Cup team,” he said. “We generally perform well at the World Cup and are often underestimated by other nations. The board and the team aim to reach higher goals, including making it to the finals, rather than just participating.”
Regarding the upcoming match against the Cook Islands Aitu, Lovodua described them as a competitive team. “There’s a lot of pride and passion in this game, with both sides eager to showcase their best performance for their nation. We take pride in our heritage,” he noted.
Lovodua believes the team has learned valuable lessons from their previous game against Papua New Guinea and looks forward to correcting their mistakes in the next match. Currently, he plays for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
