Fiji Bati Star Aims to Inspire Amid Drug Crisis

Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua, commonly known as Joe Lovodua, is eager for the Vodafone Fiji Bati representatives to serve as positive role models for the youth of Fiji, especially in light of the increasing drug abuse issues within the country. The 26-year-old is making his comeback to the national rugby league team after missing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to an injury.

Hailing from Vabea, Ono, Kadavu, and with maternal ties to Naivucini in Naitasiri, Lovodua expressed that reuniting with his family after more than six years was the highlight of his return to Fiji. He commended the team’s initiatives, particularly the community outreach programs that allow them to connect with their families face-to-face.

“The best thing is just seeing all the people and putting a smile on everyone’s face,” Lovodua said. He acknowledged the challenging times Fiji is facing regarding drug-related issues but emphasized the team’s desire to be positive role models for children who look up to them.

Having younger players on the squad, Lovodua is optimistic about the future of the Fiji Bati and feels grateful to be part of the team. He aspires to be selected for the next World Cup, stating, “It’s always an ambition and goal of mine to be available to be selected in the World Cup team. We always do so well in the World Cup; we’re often underestimated by other nations. I believe the board and the team are aiming higher, looking to reach the finals and not just be participants. We want continuous improvement.”

When asked about facing the Cook Islands Aitu, Lovodua noted their tenacity, emphasizing the pride and passion both teams bring to the game. “We’re all proud of where we come from, where our parents have,” he remarked. He expressed confidence that the team has learned from previous matches, particularly against Papua New Guinea, and is looking forward to correcting past mistakes in their upcoming training session. Lovodua is currently playing for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
