Fiji Bati Faces Do-or-Die Showdown Against Cook Islands

The Vodafone Fiji Bati rugby league team faces a crucial match against the Cook Islands this Saturday, which they must win to advance to the promotion-relegation game. This need arises after their defeat to a strong Papua New Guinea Kumuls team, where they lost 22-10 at HFC Bank Stadium, Suva, last Saturday night.

The Pacific Bowl Championship winner will compete against the third-ranked team from the Pacific Cup, with the victor earning a spot in the Cup championship next season. Bati head coach Waisake Kativerata acknowledged that his players did not execute the game plan effectively. The Kumuls established a solid 16-0 lead by halftime.

Kativerata noted, “We didn’t play to our standard. In the first half, we gave away four seven-tackle sets in a row, which made a significant difference. When facing a team like Papua New Guinea, that is unacceptable.” He remarked that despite the challenges, they created opportunities but failed to capitalize, with passes often being delayed or inaccurate.

Looking ahead, Kativerata stated that they have put the loss behind them and are focusing on the upcoming match against the Aitu men. He mentioned the need for regrouping and planning, acknowledging the strength of their future opponents, many of whom play in various NRL clubs.

The coaching staff also includes former Rabbitohs player John Sutton and Jarryd Hayne, both of whom play crucial roles in mentoring the team. Kativerata commended the forwards for their resilience in the face of the Kumuls.
