Fiji Bati eye ruck edge in Pacific Bowl bid against Cook Islands

With a wealth of attacking talent throughout the squad, Vodafone Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata is focusing on a critical aspect of their gameplay: the ruck. As the team gears up for the Pacific Bowl Championship, Kativerata emphasizes the importance of refining their defensive structure and dominating the middle third of the field.

“We need to look at our defense around the ruck area,” Kativerata stated, highlighting that while the team possesses an ability to score from anywhere, success hinges on effective defensive measures. “Our forwards must set the platform, allowing our outside backs the opportunity to really showcase their attacking skills.”

The Fiji Bati are set to begin their Pacific Bowl campaign against the Cook Islands on Saturday at 5 PM in Papua New Guinea, a match that will be broadcast live on FBC Sports. This upcoming challenge follows the team’s recent training intensification, focusing on perfecting plays and executing kicks with precision. Kativerata noted that the team’s chances of scoring diminish if they find themselves consistently on the back foot.

Reflecting on their past encounters, Kativerata spoke about the team’s need to learn from mistakes made in their previous match against Papua New Guinea. “This is an important game for us, and we aim to finish the Pacific Bowl Championship positively. We need to be fully prepared for the Cook Islands,” he asserted.

Despite the absences of several key players in the NRL due to injuries and suspensions, including Api Koroisau and Mika Ravalawa, Kativerata remains optimistic about the team’s potential. He acknowledged the fans’ support for international rugby league in Fiji and expressed excitement for the emerging talent, crucial as they build towards the Rugby League World Cup.

The upcoming match is poised to be a pivotal moment for the Fiji Bati, as they seek to make a strong statement and carry forward their momentum into the Pacific Bowl Championship.
