Veteran player Michael Jennings achieved a remarkable hat-trick as the Vodafone Fiji Bati dominated the Cook Islands with a score of 56-6 in their second match of the NRL Pacific Bowl Championship held in Suva.
The Cook Islands initiated the scoring with a quick try from Rua Ngatikaura, but the Fijian team quickly responded, scoring four consecutive tries. Sunia Turuva opened the scoreboard for Fiji, followed by Jennings’ two tries, and Kitione Kautoga capped off the first half. Taane Milne converted all the tries, leading to a 24-6 advantage for Fiji at halftime.
The second half was completely controlled by Fiji as they surged past the Cook Islands’ defense, scoring six additional tries courtesy of Semi Valemei (2), Maika Sivo (2), Jennings, and Ben Nakubuwai. Milne concluded the match with impressive statistics, racking up 230 meters gained, seven conversions, and three offloads.
This victory keeps the Fiji Bati in the competition for the Pacific Bowl and a potential promotion to the Pacific Cup in 2025. To advance, Fiji will need the Cook Islands to overcome Papua New Guinea in the upcoming Week 3 match.
