The Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) board is currently reviewing the future of Fiji Bati coach Wise Kativerata as the 2026 Rugby League World Cup approaches. FNRL chairman Akuila Masi indicated that the board is carefully evaluating the current coaching landscape following recent performances.

Masi highlighted the urgency of the situation, noting, “We had our discussion today. We looked at it from all angles; the World Cup is just around the corner.” The board is under pressure from both club representatives and the wider community, particularly after Fiji Bati’s disappointing loss to Papua New Guinea in the Pacific Bowl, sparking frustration on social media.

Clubs are vocal about their demands for improved results and the overall advancement of the game, and Masi acknowledged the mixed feedback the board has received. “The clubs are asking for results and the growth of the game. We have mixed comments from everywhere and the board is aware of that,” he stated.

The board aims to finalize their decision regarding the coaching position within the week. The ongoing struggles of the Fiji Bati, who have not managed to secure a victory against Papua New Guinea for two consecutive years in the Pacific Bowl, only add to the urgency of the situation, highlighting the need for effective leadership as the team prepares for the upcoming World Cup.

This moment presents an opportunity for reflection and change, indicating that a decisive approach in reviewing coaching strategies may pave the way for improved performance and success in the future.
