Basketball Fiji is on track to finalize its squad for the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Palau, set to take place from July 25 to August 4. The selection process will conclude on April 22, following a competitive atmosphere demonstrated during the recent Basketball Fiji Cup Competition. Interim Chief Operating Officer William Peter has observed a notable improvement in the level of competition, attributing much of this progress to the ongoing support from major sponsor Vodafone Fiji.
Peter emphasized the significance of the Mini Games, which will feature an under-23 3×3 format, akin to the fast-paced nature of 7s rugby. He pointed out that the federation has already identified a training squad to prepare for this exciting competition, and the current locally based training group has been rigorously preparing in anticipation of the final team selection.
Reflecting on past triumphs, Fiji’s basketball team won a gold medal at the Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands two years ago. Peter expressed optimism about the team’s chances for another gold at the Mini Games, bolstered by the recent rise in local competition and community support.
The spirit of dedication across all sports in Fiji is palpable. Just as in basketball, other sports teams are ramping up their preparations for the Mini Games, showcasing the collective ambition to excel on an international platform. This shared commitment underscores the hope and anticipation surrounding Fiji’s athletes as they gear up to represent their country proudly.
The upcoming Mini Games are more than just a competition; they represent an opportunity for these athletes to demonstrate their skills, foster community pride, and enhance Fiji’s recognition in the sporting world. With robust training and enthusiastic support behind them, the Fijian teams are poised for a promising performance in Palau.
