The United Blind Persons of Fiji has expressed significant concerns regarding the accessibility of newly launched banknotes by the Reserve Bank of Fiji, which were introduced in December of last year. Members of the organization have reported challenges in identifying the denominations of the new notes independently, creating difficulties in daily transactions and posing risks to their personal safety.

One of the primary issues raised is the absence of distinct size variations among the new banknotes. Previous iterations featured a two-inch size difference, which was implemented after consultations to help blind and low-vision users identify notes by touch. The new series has eliminated this key feature, making it harder for users to differentiate between denominations.

The lack of consultation during the design process has also drawn criticism from the group. Given its previous involvement with the Currency Committee, many find it disappointing that the voices of the blind and low-vision community were not sought during this critical phase.

Additionally, the United Blind Persons of Fiji highlighted that the raised dot markings on the new notes do not adhere to established Braille standards. Notably, the dot patterns found on the 50- and 100-dollar notes are not recognizable as authentic Braille symbols, leading to confusion rather than assistance for users.

The organization warns that these design shortcomings increase dependency on others, heightening the risks of financial mistakes and potential exploitation, which undermines the independence and equal participation of individuals with visual impairments.

The United Blind Persons of Fiji is urging the Reserve Bank of Fiji to take these concerns seriously and conduct comprehensive consultations along with an accessibility review. The group emphasizes that accessible currency is a fundamental right that must align with Fiji’s disability laws and international commitments, advocating for changes that would better reflect the needs of all citizens and promote inclusivity.
