Badminton Fiji secretary Abel Caine highlighted the critical need for increased awareness of the sport to attract more participants and fans across the nation. The recent 2025 Badminton Fiji Nationals, which saw 70 players competing, underscores the potential growth of badminton in Fiji.
Caine pointed out the challenges in promoting badminton, noting that it is often regarded as a lesser sport with limited popularity. He emphasized that many people lack an understanding of the thrill and intensity that badminton offers, dubbing it the fastest sport in the world. “There is a problem we are facing in Badminton Fiji; this sport is considered minor, reflected in the small turnout and limited support we see at events,” he stated. He expressed the urgent need for heightened awareness to help elevate the sport’s status in the country.
The national tournament, held at Yat Sen Secondary School, showcased players from Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka, many of whom had participated in a recent successful Secondary Schools tournament. Despite the challenges, Caine remains optimistic, noting the enthusiasm displayed by over 70 players participating in the national competition. He calls on the community to engage with and support badminton, reinforcing that interest in the sport is on the rise.
Caine’s message is clear: while there is a burgeoning interest in badminton within Fiji, enhanced awareness and community support are essential for its further development. The potential for badminton to grow in popularity is promising, and with collective efforts, the sport could gain the recognition it deserves.
