Fiji Baby Pearls head coach Simone Nalatu put her players through their paces during the opening of the Invitational Tournament at Vodafone Arena in Suva last night. This tournament is crucial for the Baby Pearls as they gear up for the World Youth Cup scheduled for September, offering essential game time for player assessment.
The tournament kicked off yesterday, running for a week and concluding this Friday. Coach Nalatu expressed her satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting the importance of the matches against tough opposition. “Yeah, I thought the team did good tonight, and we got to test everyone we wanted. Everyone got on court tonight so we got to see what they could do,” she stated appreciatively.
In their first match, the Baby Pearls Kikau squad faced off against the New South Wales Davui team, narrowly missing out with a score of 56-53. The Baby Pearls are set to compete in six more matches throughout the week, which will help in refining their skills and strategies ahead of their international commitments.
This tournament is not just about competition; it also serves to enhance team cohesion and develop the players’ skills, critical for their upcoming international challenges. The format includes splitting a 27-member extended squad into two teams, Kikau and Kacau, reflecting a structured approach to optimize player exposure.
Support from organizations like Netball Fiji and the Fiji National Sports Commission has been instrumental in facilitating these opportunities for the Baby Pearls. The players’ commitment and the resources available to them offer a hopeful trajectory for Fiji’s netball future, inspiring young athletes across the region as they prepare for their significant global stage in Gibraltar.
With their ongoing dedication and effective strategy implementation, the Baby Pearls are well-positioned to inspire the next generation of netball talent in Fiji. Their journey so far suggests a bright future for netball in the country, emphasizing growth and commitment in the sport.
