The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji is urging all road users in the country to exercise caution due to ongoing severe weather conditions, which include heavy rainfall and flash flooding impacting various regions. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted that these adverse conditions pose a significant risk to road safety, and both motorists and pedestrians need to prioritize their safety during this time.
Rokosawa emphasized the importance of vigilance in light of the intense rainfall and potential flooding. He cautioned that poor visibility and flooded roads can lead to dangerous driving conditions, advising road users to avoid unnecessary travel, especially through flood-prone areas. If travel is essential, staying updated with weather alerts and road closures is crucial.
Despite the warnings, Rokosawa expressed concern over some drivers who continue to engage in reckless behaviors, such as speeding through flooded areas. He assured that the Authority would take necessary actions against traffic law offenders to safeguard public safety. Key safety tips include adhering to speed limits, adjusting driving speeds based on weather conditions, maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, using headlights during rain, and avoiding overtaking unless absolutely necessary.
Additionally, he reiterated the significance of respecting road closures and signs, especially in flooded areas, as floodwaters can be deceptively strong. If confronted with a flooded roadway, he urged drivers to turn around and seek alternative routes to protect their lives and those of others.
The LTA is coordinating with the Fiji Police Force, Fiji Roads Authority, municipal councils, and other stakeholders to monitor road conditions and reinforce safety measures. Public safety remains the top priority, with ongoing efforts to enhance emergency response capabilities. Road users are encouraged to stay informed through reliable weather sources and local news for real-time updates, especially as several LTA branches in flood-affected areas have temporarily closed.
This call for vigilance comes at a time when community safety is paramount, and everyone has a role to play in minimizing risks on the roads during these challenging weather conditions. Staying informed and acting responsibly can help protect not only individuals but also families and communities at large.
