Fiji Authorities Seize Suspicious Consignments: What’s Inside?

A coordinated operation involving the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service led to the seizure of consignments from British Columbia, Canada, which contained equipment potentially intended for a clandestine laboratory.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew reported that task forces from both the Western and Eastern Divisions, along with the Fiji Detector Dog Unit, intercepted the consignment at a Nadi warehouse on Friday.

Upon analyzing the substances found in several containers, it was determined that they were not illicit. However, since the substances were known medications and recognized precursors, the investigation has shifted to focus on possible manufacturing activities.

The Acting Commissioner highlighted that this angle is being probed because multiple cartons contained equipment and apparatus typically used in the illicit drug manufacturing process.

Chew emphasized that this seizure is significant in the overall efforts to combat illegal drugs, covering various aspects such as unlawful possession, cultivation, importation, and manufacturing.

As the investigation progresses, six individuals have been taken in for questioning. Chew noted that the investigation is still in its early stages and more individuals are expected to be questioned in the near future.
