Fiji authorities foil cocaine shipment in cross-agency operation

A collaborative operation between the Fiji Police Force and the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has resulted in the arrest of a 40-year-old General Manager from Tamavua, along with three accomplices, following the interception of a cocaine shipment from Brazil. The authorities moved swiftly after the consignment, labeled as a “smoke machine,” raised suspicions during inspection at the airport, where it was detected by a drug detector dog.

According to the police statement, the package, which arrived in the country on October 27, 2025, contained a concealed motherboard that, upon inspection, was found to harbor approximately 640 grams of cocaine. The authorities conducted a controlled delivery of the package, leading to the interception of a vehicle at the company’s car park on October 30, where the suspects were apprehended.

The primary suspect faces charges of Unlawful Importation of Illicit Drugs, in violation of the Illicit Drugs Control Act 2004, and is currently in police custody awaiting a court appearance at the Suva Magistrates Court. The other three individuals involved were interviewed and subsequently released after consultation with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

This operation mirrors recent activities within Fiji’s law enforcement framework, which has seen increased collaborative efforts between the police and customs officials to combat drug trafficking. Previous significant cases involved the interception of over four kilograms of methamphetamine, with several individuals facing charges, including law enforcement officials suspected of collusion within drug trafficking operations.

These coordinated efforts underline a determined approach by Fijian authorities to dismantle organized drug networks and ensure public safety. Authorities remain vigilant and committed to continuing these proactive measures, fostering hope for a decline in drug-related offenses and a safer environment for residents.
