Fiji–Australia Launches $25 Million Governance Partnership to Modernize Public Service

Fiji and Australia have announced a significant advancement in their longstanding partnership with the official launch of the Australia–Fiji Governance Partnership (AFGP). Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka introduced this initiative on October 24, 2025, which underscores both countries’ dedication to good governance, accountability, and shared democratic values.

The AFGP, valued at AUD$25 million over four years, is designed to bolster Fiji’s ongoing reforms by focusing on three pivotal areas: Civil Service Reform, Economic Governance, and the Promotion of Democratic Norms and Values. This program aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan, aiming to modernize the civil service and enhance public sector efficiency and performance.

In his address, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasized that this partnership embodies Fiji and Australia’s unified vision of strengthening governance and driving economic reform. He especially highlighted the establishment of the Fiji Learning Institute for Public Service (FLIPS) as a major milestone in enhancing leadership and capacity within the public sector.

The collaboration will engage Fiji’s Ministry of Civil Service, Public Service Commission, and Ministry of Finance alongside the Australian Government to foster significant reforms, including the digitization of services and performance management improvements.

Peter Roberts, the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, praised the new partnership, noting that it builds on the successful achievements of the Fiji–Australia Institutional Partnerships Program (IPP), which has already made strides in areas such as parliamentary collaboration, public financial management, and taxation reform.

Both leaders reiterated that the AFGP represents a robust testament to the strong bilateral relationship between Fiji and Australia, solidifying their mutual trust, values, and commitment to establishing a transparent and resilient governance framework for the future. This optimistic development signals hope for enhanced collaboration and shared prosperity for both nations moving forward.
