The Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association (FSSAA) is striving to enhance the competitive landscape for young athletes by introducing two additional qualifying meets ahead of the Fiji Finals. Biu Colati, the acting secretary of FSSAA, highlights that many athletes face limited opportunities to gain vital competition experience, especially when compared to other sports like rugby and football. Athletes typically only participate in zone competitions before the nationals, which can hinder their preparedness.
To address these challenges, the FSSAA has introduced the Western Division Games and Central Games as qualifying events scheduled for March. This initiative allows athletes, especially those who may not initially qualify, a second chance to secure their spot at the Fiji Finals, set for April 24-26 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Such efforts have been seen in the past as well, including last year’s introduction of divisional qualifying zones, which provided greater inclusivity and participation opportunities for athletes from various schools.
In addition to expanding qualifying opportunities, the FSSAA has partnered with the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation for live coverage of the Fiji Finals, thereby motivating athletes through increased visibility and the chance to be observed by scouts. This partnership reflects a growing commitment to enhance support for youth sports and promote a culture of athletic achievement within Fiji.
As anticipation builds for the Fiji Finals and the upcoming qualifying events, the focus remains on fostering a spirit of competition, community support, and athletic excellence among students. The expanded framework for qualifications aims to inspire a generation of athletes while ensuring every competitor has an equitable chance to shine on the national stage.
