The long-anticipated finals of the Suva Zone Two athletics competition have commenced, showcasing talent from 14 schools in events like the 800 meters, 200 meters, and relays, including the 4x100m and 4x400m. Savenaca Muamua, vice-president of the Fiji Secondary Schools Athletics Association Central, expressed appreciation for the two-day event format which allows athletes essential rest between competitions, enhancing their overall performance.

This year’s competition is particularly momentous as it marks the 50th anniversary of Fiji Secondary Schools athletics. Muamua emphasized the significance of live coverage for the first time, noting it presents an exciting yet challenging environment for athletes striving to excel in front of an audience.

On the first day of the event, Marist Brothers High School showcased overwhelming dominance in the boys’ division, earning 14 gold, 13 silver, and 12 bronze medals. Suva Grammar School trailed in second place with 7 gold, 4 silver, and 6 bronze medals, followed by Jai Narayan College, who managed to secure one gold. In the girls’ division, Suva Grammar School also excelled, finishing strong with 12 gold medals, accompanied by 10 silver and 9 bronze. Saint Joseph’s Secondary School closely pursued them with 9 gold, 9 silver, and 11 bronze medals, while Nuku Secondary School contributed 2 gold and 2 silver to their totals.

Additionally, today marks the ceremonial launch of the Fiji Finals torch relay at the Coca-Cola headquarters in Laucala Beach, Suva, intensifying the spirit of competition among the participants and their supporters.

This celebration of 50 years of athletic achievement not only serves as a competitive platform but also acts as an inspiration for younger generations to delve into sports and aspire for excellence. The ongoing events foster a sense of community that is rooted in perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship, paving a hopeful future for athletics in Fiji.
